The temperature is dropping and we’re all feeling the effects of this chilly, winter air moving in. The days are getting shorter, and our body is making some physiological changes to prepare us for winter. Trees prepare for winter by shedding their leaves to conserve water and energy and store nutrients in their roots. Our bodies also prepare for winter by going through a period of shedding and conservation which we usually experience as colds or the flu.
We have been taught that having a runny nose, a cough or an upset stomach means we are sick. Our bodies are brilliant and are doing this for a reason! The sniffles and cough we are experiencing are our lungs and respiratory system clearing themselves out. The cravings we have are an instinct to get nutrition we need to conserve before winter begins. The most important thing is to allow our body to express these natural transitions and to allow our body to work through them.
Some tips to consider preparing your body for the winter months:
1. Drink lots of water!
2. Get quality, restful sleep.
3. Increase your Vitamin D intake.
4. Reduce processed sugar, processed foods, and alcohol.
It is important to have a healthy spine and nerve supply to all the organs and tissues of the body. The nerve system controls all functions in the body, even the immune system. Research shows that regular chiropractic care helps support healthy nerve supply, interference free communication between the body and the brain and immune competence.
If you’re struggling with a cold or seasonal aches and pains remember your body is brilliant and is preparing you for the season ahead! And if you want help with any of these things, contact Westwood Family Chiropractic at 781-769-2500 or info@westwoodfamilychiropractic.com .

Keeping your attention and awareness on what you are doing is the greatest way to maximize performance and minimize injury. So often we perform actions unconsciously. Although this may allow us to multitask, it also reduces accuracy and precision while increasing the risk of injury.
This is true with all physical activity but nothing quite as evident as when people shovel snow.
When one’s attention is focused on “the kids,” “the job,” “the meeting,” or anything other than the act of shoveling, we risk becoming injured. When shoveling snow, pay attention to the following:
1. Remain mindful, keep your attention on the experience.
2. Breathe when moving. Keeping the breath active maximizes the bodies strength and performance.
3. Warm up. As with any physical activity, it is wise to warm up the body beforehand. Consider a few minutes of a warmup exercise or gentle stretching before shoveling.
4. Pace yourself. Considering taking breaks and vary movements. Shoveling the same way in the same direction increases the likelihood of injury. Also, it is better to shovel a few inches at a time rather than waiting till the end of the storm when there is more snow to move.
5. Have a good shovel that you can manage. Also space your hands apart when gripping the shovel to increase the leverage.
6. Proper lifting. Pushing the snow is better than lifting. If you must lift, squat with your legs apart, knees bent, back straight. Lift with the legs rather than the arms. Walk the snow in the shovel to where you want to dump it rather than throwing the snow.
7. If you are experiencing pain, particularly increasing painful sensations, stop immediately and seek professional help.

Like so many others seeking help with lower back pain, Denise, a thirty-five-year-old fit woman, consulted Westwood Family Chiropractic. We performed a thorough exam and began a program of care to help her. Denise learned that the spine is the master “switch box” for the nerves that control the body. As her spine became healthier, the nerves would control the body better. Within a few weeks, Denise’s pain and physical limitations improved. She was elated to see that chiropractic was an answer to her impairment. But then, a more amazing phenomena occurred.
Two months after beginning care, Denise reported that she was pregnant. Obviously, we were all excited for Denise and her husband, Bob. She revealed to us that she and her husband had been trying to get pregnant for over 5 years. They had been to numerous physicians and health care providers to determine if there was a problem. The medical tests on her and her husband were non-conclusive to offer an explanation. Denise and Bob were beginning to consider in-vitro fertilization.
When she became pregnant, it was a shock to her and her husband. Denise stated that the only different thing in her life in the previous months was chiropractic care, she wondered if that might be the reason.
We told her that her experience is not unique. We have had several women become pregnant after beginning chiropractic care who were previously unable to conceive. When the spine is not functioning optimally, the body does not work as well. Nerves that travel through the spine go to every organ and system in the body. If there is any type of nerve obstruction or interference, it upsets proper function. The nerves that control the uterus, the balance of body chemistry and function of the ovaries all pass through the spine. If those nerves are adversely impacted, it will upset bodily function. There is no “fertility” adjustment. Chiropractors will locate and correct (adjust) misalignments of the spine which obstruct proper nerve function (nerve interference). When adjusted (corrected) the body works as nature intended.
People usually think of chiropractic only for lower back pain and headaches or after an injury or accident. Chiropractic care can help every body whether or not they have a symptom. Studies show that 99% of healthy babies have endured trauma in the birth process. These spinal injuries can go undetected for years. Chiropractic is safe and effective at any age.
People have reported miraculous changes from chiropractic care. The real miracle is a body that works properly. Chiropractors remove nerve interference to allow the body to work the way nature designed. Without nerve interference, the miraculous body can work as it is designed.

Don’t let “myths” deprive you, your family and your friends from receiving the amazing benefits of chiropractic care. Some say it’s the best kept health care secret. We will debunk some myths and give you the facts.
Myth #1: Chiropractic care is for old people
Response: Chiropractic care is appropriate at any age. Just like dental care is for anyone with teeth, chiropractic care is for anyone with a spine. The chiropractors at Westwood Family Chiropractic are highly trained (and certified) to care for all ages from newborns to seniors. Our training allows us to detect spinal problems before they cause symptoms.
Myth #2: My neck will be twisted and “cracked”
Response: Fact: Chiropractic care is gentle and specific. We can and do care for people without twisting and cracking. There are many ways to deliver a chiropractic adjustment to make positive changes. Ask your chiropractor to explain the process before they give you your first adjustment.
Myth #3: Chiropractors can hurt people!
Response: Chiropractic has served millions of people for over 125 years and is one of the safest forms of health care! Ask the insurance actuaries - the more risk, the higher a doctor’s malpractice premiums. A chiropractor pays, on average, $1,200 per year for malpractice insurance, compared to a primary care doctor, who pays over $40,000 per year. Low risk of injury equals low premiums. Chiropractic care is safe and effective.
Myth #4: Once you start, you can’t stop
Response: Some people use chiropractic to help with an immediate problem. Some use chiropractic on a regular basis to stay healthy and feel good. Chiropractors don’t force people to keep going. They go because it makes sense to care for their spine on a regular basis. The choice is yours. Chiropractic care keeps your nerve system (your lifeline inside your spine) “tuned up” and “turned on” so every cell in your body can work at its best.
Myth #5: Chiropractic care is costly
Response: An investment in your spinal health is priceless. You will reap the benefits for the rest of your life. Fact: Many chiropractors offer affordable payment options so you can get all the care you need for as long as you choose, regardless of insurance involvement. Family chiropractic offices often have affordable plans so the whole family can receive the care they need to keep their spines healthy for a lifetime.
